If you know anything about the sport of lacrosse then you know who Shamel and Rhamel Bratton are and how they were a major part of lacrosse during 2009 – 2011 at UVA. You could say that they revolutionized that the sport with their athleticism, lacrosse IQ, and overall talent. They were purely one of a kind players and talent.
For those of you who don’t know what happened, the Brattons were kicked off of UVA for not following team policy which included missing practice and not following a very strict alcohol policy. That was according to a Washington Post article had a lot to do with the tragic death of Yearly Love where 8 UVA men’s lacrosse players were arrested due to alcohol-related incidents.
The Brattons thought they were above it all and said they would not follow the alcohol policy and obviously it did not work out in their favor. It was voted on by the players of the team which means that there had to have been incidents in the past where the Brattons thought they were above it all. I do think that Dom Stars (Coach at the time) did put their team on a pedestal because they eventually won the NCAA championship. I think that brought the team together which eventually worked in their favor.
After college, the Brattons had a brief stint playing on the LXM Pro Tour and played in the MLL for a short period of time.
It truly is tragic and I do feel bad for the Brattons in a way because I bet looking back now they do miss it, they do miss playing under the lights with their teammates. I bet they wish they could go back and change everything.
I wonder what could’ve been….
